UN Global Compact Network Nigeria Rings the Stock Exchange Bell In Support of Gender Equality

The Global Compact Network Nigeria in partnership with the Nigerian Stock Exchange held a half day symposium and ring the bell occasion to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 6.
The theme of the event “Each for Equal” aligned with the 2020 International Women’s day Theme and drew participants from various national and international organizations including the UNWomen, the International Finance Corporation, The British High Commission, and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)
The event had in attendance board members of the Global Compact Network Nigeria, Mrs. Bola Adeshola, Mrs. Uto Ukpanna, CEO of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, representatives of UN Women and International Finance Commission IFC.
In his opening speech, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Stock Exchange Mr. Oscar Onyeama, welcomed all guests to the event and reiterated the Nigerian Stock Exchange Commitment to narrow both the global and local gender gap. He affirmed that the Nigerian Stock Exchange will continue to advocate for a collaborative approach to accelerate the pace for change both at the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the eco system.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Bola Adeshola stated that a country that empowers women in all sectors across the economy will yield strong and just economies. She called on companies to make laws that empowers women in the work place, market place and the community. Mrs. Utoh Ukpannah, also encouraged women to continue to put in the work and not allow what society defines women to be put them in a box.
At the close of Market, members of the Global Compact represented by Mrs. Uto Ukpannah, Mrs. Bola Adeshola and Mrs. Folashade Ambrose Medebem joined the CEO of the Nigerian Stock Exchange Mr Oscar Onyeama, The British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson, The Chairman of the Board of CAPPLC Mrs. Awuneba Ajumogobia, Country Manager for International Finance Corporation Eme Essien and Weyinmi Omamuli of UN Women to ring the bell for gender equality.
This event put the Global Compact Network Nigeria as one of the 68 Local Networks of the UN Global Compact that partnered with their country Stock Exchange to join 77 Stock Exchanges in the world as they ring the bell for gender equality to commemorate International Women’s Day 2020.
