LAGOS, NIGERIA, 23 May, 2023 — The UN Global Compact Network Nigeria acknowledges the momentous occasion of Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL), a member of the Oando PLC group of companies, launching the proof-of-concept phase of its pioneering Sustainable Transport Initiative in Lagos State, Nigeria.

This groundbreaking project demonstrates Oando’s dedication to the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, which they have participated in since 2009, as well as their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 13 (Climate Action). We are delighted to recognise Oando PLC for their efforts and exemplary leadership in driving clean and efficient transportation solutions.

The launch of electric vehicle (EV) mass transit buses in partnership with the Lagos State government sets a commendable precedent for other industry stakeholders and signifies a milestone in the pursuit of sustainable urban mobility. Electric vehicles have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and contribute to the mitigation of climate change.

Furthermore, this initiative supports the United Nations Global Compact’s mandate to promote sustainable development, social progress, and environmental stewardship, which aligns with Principle 8 of the United Nations Global Compact: “Businesses should undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility’.

Oando’s Sustainable Transport Initiative, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation, will contribute to global climate goals and Nigeria’s sustainable development.

We encourage all businesses, including Oando PLC, to continue exploring innovative and sustainable solutions that create shared value for society, the environment, and the economy. Collaboration between the private sector, governments, and civil society is crucial for achieving the SDGs and creating a more sustainable future for all.

The United Nations Global Compact remains committed to supporting businesses in their journey towards responsible and sustainable operations, and we look forward to witnessing further progress and innovation in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.

Together, let us continue working towards a world where sustainable business practices are
the norm and where the Sustainable Development Goals become a reality for every
individual and community.

Once again, we extend our warmest congratulations to Oando PLC on the launch of its Sustainable Transport Initiative and commend the organisation for its visionary commitment to climate action and sustainability.
